VOA Learning English: America's Presidents - Millard Fillmore
Before he was vice president, Millard Fillmore served as a US Representative from New York. In 1849, Fillmore elected as Zachary Taylor's vice president. As vice president, Fillmore was in charge of the United States Senate while it was fighting over a decision about slavery in Texas and New Mexico.
In July 1850, Taylor died and Fillmore succeeded him as the 13th US President (July 9, 1850 – March 3, 1853).
As president, Fillmore signed the Compromise of 1850. Although, the Compromise of 1850 tried to make peace between the northern states and the southern states, soon they were fighting again which led to the Civil War. His decision to sign the Compromise of 1850 made many of the people in his own party upset at him. They stopped him from running for president in 1852.
One important thing hat he did: he started the first library at the White House.
