In 1990 then-President George H.W. Bush approved a resolution declaring November "National American Indian Heritage Month," and it's been observed ever since. VOA's Alex Yanevskyy visited the Museum of Natural History in Utah on a day when Native American heritage was being celebrated.

Why I Quit My Job Carrying Out Trump’s Immigration Policies | NYT Opinion

NYTimes: Why I Quit My Job Carrying Out Trump’s Immigration Policies | NYT Opinion

A former asylum officer says “remain in Mexico” and other policies undermining asylum aren’t just racist, they’re illegal.

In the Video Op-Ed above, a former asylum officer reveals why he resigned: to protest President Trump’s policy requiring migrants to remain in Mexico while awaiting hearings.

Doug Stephens had been an asylum officer for two years. But two days and five interviews that resulted in sending asylum seekers back to danger shook him. He drafted a memo detailing his legal objections to the policy, and circulated it to 80 of his colleagues, his supervisors and a member of Congress. And then he quit.

Mr. Stephens is not the only asylum officer who has grappled with following orders. In interviews with a half-dozen current and former asylum officers across the country, The Times learned of individuals leaving their posts, requesting job transfers and falling into deep depression.

The right to asylum has been a cornerstone of international immigration law since the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. The United States, along with 144 other nations, made a commitment to protect those who arrive at our borders with “a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion.”

To date, Mr. Trump’s remain in Mexico policy, officially known as one of the “Migrant Protection Protocols,” has left nearly 58,000 asylum seekers stranded in Mexico.

    Remembering JFK

VOANews: Remembering John F. Kennedy – the 56th Anniversary of the Assassination

56 years ago, President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed during a visit to Dallas, Texas, November 22, 1963. His assassination shocked Americans and people around the world.

👉 President John Kennedy, 46 years old when he died, was the youngest man ever elected president. He served only 1,000 days in office, yet he remains one of the most popular presidents in American history.

Kennedy was elected president in 1960, and faced difficult foreign policy decisions during his less than three years in office. The United States and the Soviet Union were in the midst of a Cold War, and he was elected on a goal of fighting Communism.

He suffered early in his term with a failed invasion of Cuba. But his public image recovered during a visit to Germany. In Berlin, Kennedy became famous for a speech denouncing Soviet Communism.
Later, he ordered a naval blockade of Cuba in an effort to stop the shipment of Soviet missiles to the island. He successfully persuaded the Soviet Union to remove the missiles already there and disarm the weapon sites.
Kennedy’s creation of the Peace Corps and his support of the space program were major victories at home during his presidency. He also helped move forward civil rights efforts.

During the 1960 campaign, it was a close battle between Kennedy, a Democratic senator from Massachusetts, and Vice President Richard Nixon, the Republican nominee.

The fate of about 800,000 young, undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children is in the hands of nine Supreme Court justices. The court will decide if the Trump administration has the right to end the program, called DACA, which protects the young immigrants from deportation.
