The children and youths range in age from 4 to 14 years old, and are originally from the following 12 countries: Cameroon, Canada, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Kenya, Republic of Korea, Somalia, South Africa, Thailand, Uganda and Vietnam. The Honorable David T. Schultz from the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota presided. Welcome new Americans!

VOANews: Could 2018 Be Politically "The Year of the Woman" Men outnumber women by 5 to 1 in the U.S. Congress. But now some are calling the 2018 election “The Year of the Woman,” as many women -- even those with no experience -- jump into political races. For some, this comes in reaction to the election of President Trump, which was protested by tens of thousands of American women. We set out to find a Democrat and a Republican who were inspired to run for the first time in their lives. VOA’s Carolyn Presutti reports. VOANews: Online Resources Aid Female Candidates Only about 1 in 5 politicians in the US is female, even though women make up just over half of the US population. With many saying 2018 could be “The Year of the Woman” in American politics, new tools have become available for women running for office. VOA’s Carolyn Presutti shows us some high-tech and social media sites geared toward female candidates. Originally published at - https://www.voanews.com/a/4085204.html

This year marks the 150th anniversary of Russia's sale of Alaska to the United States. Alaska is one of the biggest US states in land size and one of the least populous, with less than three-quarters of a million residents. Among them is a group of people whose story is a classic American tale of religion and refuge in a remote land. VOA's Natasha Mozgovaya (narrated by VOA's Martin Secrest) uncovers a group of Soviet refugees who have planted roots in what once was Russian territory.

No, not Learning Chocolate, we will be taking CASAS.org Assessments
Tonight, Citizenship students will take a CASAS test
Today we give 2 (or possibly 3) CASAS tests to our current Citizenship Students
The Citizenship Interview Test (CIT) is a one-on-one oral assessment that simulates the citizenship applicant's English-language interview with a USCIS examiner (This test will be given to students who have been in class for several months).
The Government and History for Citizenship tests reveal how much students know about American government and history. (All citizenship students will take this test)
Life and Work Reading Sample Test (All citizenship students will take this test)
Use these sample test items to:
familiarize students with CASAS items
help reduce student test-taking anxiety
These items are samples to familiarize students with CASAS test formats. Since they are not actual tests, they are not predictors of student performance, and are not valid for level placement, assessment, or for reporting standardized scores.
Linda Barrett Osborne and Paolo Battaglia discuss their new book comprising a visual history of the Italian American experience from the collections of the Library.
