Green Card Lottery Faces Elimination Under US Immigration Reform

VOAVideo: Green Card Lottery Faces Elimination Under US Immigration Reform

The popular Green Card Lottery program could be eliminated if the U.S. Congress passes the current version of the bipartisan immigration reform plan. The lottery was set up as a way to give anyone a chance at the "American dream." But as VOA's Brian Padden reports, the new plan will focus instead on adding more highly-educated workers in science, technology, engineering and math.

Washington Newseum Honors 82 Journalists Killed in 2012

USCIS 100:06 6. What is one right or freedom from the First Amendment?*

VOAVideo: Washington Newseum Honors 82 Journalists Killed in 2012

The First Amendment to the US Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and also protects freedom of the press. But in many countries, journalists are not allowed to report the news or criticize their governments, and are punished or even killed for doing so. And in war zones, journalists are frequently exposed to crossfire. The dangers to journalists are evident in the number of those killed in the line of duty. VOA's Carolyn Presutti takes us to the Newseum in Washington, to show us the most dangerous country for journalists in 2012.

Two VOA Stories about Immigration

VOAVideo: Washington Week: Obama Trip to Mexico Keeps Focus on Immigration Reform

Washington's political cacophony will be muffled this week, with Congress in recess and President Barack Obama scheduled to travel outside the United States. Even so, the president's trip to Mexico and Central America will shine a spotlight on efforts to overhaul America's immigration system. VOA's Michael Bowman reports.

VOAVideo: Same-Sex Spouses Seek Equal Immigration Rights

Published on Feb 21, 2013
Americans who marry citizens of other countries have the right to sponsor their spouse for legal immigrant status. That option is forbidden to same-sex couples, however, even those legally married in one of the U.S. states that permit it -- because a federal law defines marriage as solely between a man and a woman. VOA's Carolyn Weaver reports on the dilemma that bi-national same-sex couples face. They fear the law may force them to leave the U.S. or tear them apart.

Weekly Address: Fixing our Immigration System and Expanding Trade in Latin America

You can watch President Obama's speech or read along with the second video.

Weekly Address: Fixing our Immigration System and Expanding Trade in Latin America

President Obama describes the incredible opportunities to create middle-class jobs in the United States by deepening our economic ties and expanding trade in Latin America and discusses recent Senate bill that takes commonsense steps to fix our broken immigration system.

ListenAndReadAlong: President Obama May 4th, 2013 - Weekly Address - 20130504

"In Mexico, I also talked about immigration reform, because that's an important issue that affects both our countries.

The truth is, right now, our border with Mexico is more secure than it's been in years. We've put more boots on that border than at any time in our history, and illegal crossings are down by nearly 80 percent from their peak in 2000. But we've got more to do -- not just to secure the border but to fix an immigration system that is badly broken.

In recent weeks, we've seen a commonsense immigration reform bill introduced in the Senate. This bill is a compromise, which means that nobody got everything they wanted -- including me. But it's largely consistent with the principles I've laid out from the beginning.
It would continue to strengthen security at our borders and hold employers more accountable if they knowingly hire undocumented workers.

It would provide a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million individuals who are already in this country illegally.

And it would modernize our legal immigration system so that we're able to reunite families and attract the highly-skilled entrepreneurs and engineers who will help create good paying jobs and grow our economy.

These are all commonsense steps that the majority of Americans support. So there's no reason that immigration reform can't become a reality this year."

VOA religion correspondent Jerome Socolovsky reports on a daring experiment by Thomas Jefferson.

How Immigration Reform Could Affect English Learners

VOALearningEnglish: How Immigration Reform Could Affect English Learners

From VOA Learning English, this is Education. Immigration reform is a top policy goal this year in Washington. President Obama and a group of Democratic and Republican senators who have been preparing legislation agree on one thing. Millions of immigrants who are in the United States illegally will have to start learning English before they can begin the process of becoming legal residents. But school systems that face shrinking budgets are still cutting or eliminating English classes. Overcrowding is especially bad in California. That state is home to one of every four non-English-speaking immigrants in the United States. (read more)
